Michael Brown of Hive Studios - Developing New Artists, Including Amime Oscen

April 16th, 2016

Michael Brown is co-founder/co-owner of Hives Studios in Ontario, Canada. He and his partner, Eric Papky, bring years of their knowledge of music, production and the business-end to help artists launch a music career. Michael talked to us about his work, and about his work with SPITdigital’s artist, Anime Oscen.

The SPITslam Group (Kate G): You and Eric worked with Chuck D’s SPITdigital artist, Anime Oscen, to give her the help to get her voice and lyrics out to the public. Can you tell us about your thoughts on Anime and her development from the time she came to Hive Studios to the present? How did your studio help her?

Michael Brown: Eric and I, [Michael] have been friends with Leslie [Anime] way before we started working together and writing music. Anime came in roughly 15 years ago and worked on recording some cover songs at Hive Studios. Anime was looking to get into the industry and wanted some studio experience. After our first few sessions, we suggested that because she had such great potential, that she should get some help from one of our close friends who was a professional vocal coach. She began to gain skill and confidence.

Let's fast forward until about 2 years ago, fall of 2014. Anime at this time had a lot more experience under her belt, from singing contests, playing in cover bands and writing. We loved a lot of her ideas and being musicians / producers, we knew we could add a lot more production to her songs and possibly start writing together. At this point, Hive Studios has been working and writing with different musicians for 11 years. It was a no-brainer and we all agreed that we should have a serious sit down and start creating new material for an album. We were all very excited about this cool collaboration and wanting to work together as friends.

The SPITslam Group: Her new album, “Broken Chain,” was recorded at Hive. It is really good, with her unique voice and lyrics. I heard she is making a new album. Can you tell us what we can expect from her on this one?

Michael Brown: The debut album "Broken Chain" is a collection of songs that were the first ever written by Anime. During the recording process we ended up collaborating on the writing for the song Left Right Center. We had a great start to this new album! It has a fresh and more mature sound. We expect a spectacular end product and for things to only get better and better as we progress.

The SPITslam Group: How did you and your partner get into the studio business?

Michael Brown: Eric and I got into the studio business because of our love and passion for music, I came from the East Coast of Canada, New Brunswick while Eric had his roots here in Hamilton, Ontario.  At that time, we were both building and finding our way into the music industry. We both started out as musicians first and foremost, touring, writing and recording. We were getting some praise on our work and the style of production we were adding to other artist’s music.

We've dedicated our lives to music, our drive and determination really seemed to help as well when we decided to open our own recording studio. We both come from very musical families so it makes sense looking back that this is what we were born to do.

Eric and I met initially because we both auditioned for a bass player position in a local cover band that was playing 6 nights a week. Long story short and many beers later, we've been playing, touring, writing original music and running a successful, award winning recording studio business together for almost 15 years. Hive Studios has became our home for writing and helping out other artists to create and work on their projects. We're super excited and very appreciative to do what we love everyday!

The SPITslam Group: How did you and your partner get into the studio business?

Michael Brown: Eric and I built Hive Studios from the ground up, making the musician, band or solo artist the main priority in every project. Being musicians ourselves, we totally understand what is required to get a well produced recording with all the nuances of capturing a perfect "take".

The SPITslam Group: Tell us about what Hive offers to a musician.

Michael Brown: Currently we offer over 40 combined years of experience. We've dropped pretty much everything in our lives to be able to work full time in this business. We have a lot to offer not only with the music side and production but the business side too. We have made many friends and contacts who can help artist(s) get themselves together and to be able to manage themselves to launch their careers.

The SPITslam Group: Any last thoughts?

Michael Brown: We are so excited and fortunate to be able to do what we do. We really appreciate Slamjamz taking the time out to ask us questions. We look forward to what the future may hold, we see nothing but great things to come!!
